Why abigail williams is a victim

She is exhibited as a skillful liar, manipulative, dishonest; someone who is willing to go to great lengths to protect herself. Miller continues to sway us to view Abigail as a villainous character throughout the play. While Miller cleverly hints that she may be in fact be a victim of a Puritan Society at times, there is never enough to see her as a real victim Through his use of stage directions, dialogues and his characterization of Abigail he manages to evoke sympathy for her, perhaps showing that she was not always the complete villain we see her as.

To the best of their knowledge the American forest was the last place on earth that was not paying homage to God. Defining that there was no margin for mistakes, anyone suspicious of witchcraft would be hanged.

How Abigail acts, can be seen as a result of the environment she grew up in where everyone around her was toxic, self-absorbent and only cared about their reputation. This could be the main factor in her manipulative nature.

It could be that since she is still young and Proctor took advantage of her giving her mixed feelings and leading her into curiosity hence making her lust towards him to make such decisions that lead to various consequences. Her need for self-preservation emerges and she immediately blamed Tituba, proclaiming that she was a witch and a devil worshipper 12 and that she conjured spirits 16 in order to avoid being accused of practicing witchcraft.

The person most to blame for the chaos is John Proctor, John took advantage of a young woman named Abigail Williams when his wife, Elizabeth Proctor, was ill. John used Abigail as a distraction from his sick wife and when Elizabeth found out about the affair she fired Abigail. As a child, Abigail witnessed her parents being murdered and she had no one to look up to, John showed her new ways to view the world, how to love and how to be loved.

When he turned his back to Abigail she became angry and confused. Because he was ashamed of his actions and did not want to think of his indiscretions he never told Abigail it was over. One of those dynamic characters is Abigail, a seventeen year old girl. At first glance it is easy to blame Abigail for the witch trials in Salem, as she is a devious and manipulative girl, however, the truth is that Abigail is a victim of a strict, Puritan society.

Her upbringing and past led her to be the person she is in the play. Although one cannot excuse her for what she did, one can understand her, and even commiserate with her. In the beginning of the play, Abigail feels she has done nothing wrong by dancing in the woods. The only thing she is worried about is the town not figuring out that she played with witchery. In act one we read how Abigail has an argument with Betty because she is muttering the truth.

Luckily it was only the girls in the room at this time, but Abigail seems very terrified that others will hear this. In addition, the children of Puritan society were never valued by their parents and their physical and psychological health would not be developed very well. Like her contemporaries, Abigail lacks care from her uncle in her childhood. She is adopted by her uncle Parris Williams who a priest in Salem. Without the correct guidance, Abigail has to face and solve every problem she may meet in her life by herself.

Even though she uses some wrongful means to achieve her purpose, she never cares about whether they are correct or not, because nobody enlightens her how to face these difficult situations.

Therefore, the identity of being an orphan and her miserable childhood experiences cause the ruthless and dishonest character of Abigail, and make her become a victim of the Puritan society. Furthermore, Abigail is a victim in the love affair because she loses her reputation and gets nothing in the end.

This shows that Abigail has lost her reputation in Salem. Her affair with John Proctor is already known by many people and this event causes nobody would like to employ her.

As an unmarried girl, innocence is very important, unlike Proctor who has married Elizabeth. In her future life, no one would like to marry such a soiled girl. On the last night of my joy, some eight months past. My wife, my dear good wife, took this girl soon after, sir, and put her out on the highroad. And being what she is, a lump of vanity […] Miller John Proctor would rather sacrifice his reputation than harming those innocent people including his wife.

There is not any love is remained in his heart, only anger and hatred. Abigail is a loser in love: she loses Proctor. She is too young and impulsive so that she never considers the consequences when she falls in love with Proctor who cannot bring her anything she wants. Thus, she gets nothing.
