Even Gandalf is the most A strong member of the fellowship , You will lose something of yourself in the battle with Sauron. Tolkien is known for his extensive lore and impermeable extended writings in The Similarilion , and between those writings and the original book, there is a lot more than can be understood about the change that Gandalf undergoes.

After seeming to fall in battle to the Balrog during The Fellowship of the Ring , Gandalf reappeared later entirely transformed for the remainder of his journey in Middle-Earth. No longer Gandalf the Grey, he now insists that he is Gandalf the White. So, how different is Gandalf the White from the character that was originally established for these characters in The Fellowship of the Ring?

A proper understanding of the differences between Gandalf the Grey and Gandalf the White requires the audience to first know about Gandalf's true identity and his ancient, divine origins.

Gandalf was one of the Maiar, a race of beings who assisted in the original creation of Arda the location of Middle-Earth and he was incredibly powerful. Originally Gandalf served as a divine emissary for the gods of creation, the Valar, and was tasked with defeating Sauron. Despite his background, Gandalf the Grey chose to roam Middle-Earth in his battered Grey Robes and kept his true powers hidden.

In the second part, The Two Towers, the story continues in parallel in two books, and in the first, it tells us the story about remaining members of the Fellowship who assist the country of Rohan in the war against traitor Saruman, a former leader of the Order of the Wizard, who wants the Ring for himself. They learn that he defeated Balrog and even though he himself was killed then, he was sent back and reborn as an important character. It seems that while there, he regained his previously lost memories.

As Saruman lost his place as the white wizard by turning to the dark, Gandalf was to take his place as the white wizard. Upon returning to Middle Earth as Gandalf the White , his previous life as Gandalf the Gray must have seemed like a short and distant memory.

I am Gandalf the White. He says he is the same person, with his previous memories, but draws the distinction that he has changed greatly from the wizard the Fellowship once knew. His limitations as one of the Istari have been lifted maybe not completely and he is now a greater version of Gandalf the Grey. As he puts it:. He became the leader Saruman was not, leading the efforts of the resistance as Saruman should have, have him not betrayed them all.

So he was Gandalf, with either enhanced wisdom and power, or lifting part of his limitations, allowing him to use more of the might he already had within himself. As you can clearly see from this explanation, Gandalf the Grey was like living in some dream, without knowledge of what happened before, and thus, reducing his powers. While Gandalf the White was the same man, he was like waking from a dream that now looks like a very short time in his life, and with it getting all or almost all his powers and memory back.
