Why angels
But God also created the spiritual world which is ordinarily beyond the senses. And in this spiritual world are the angels who, like human beings, have been created by God for some purpose. Angels are spiritual beings which ordinarily do not have bodies or take form.
They are indeed messengers, as well as servants, warriors and adorers of God. Certain angels were created just for you and for me to guide us along the way of life. Now, angels are highly intelligent beings. And because they are pure spirits, their minds are completely focused, unaffected by the material world. Thus, when presented with a choice to be obedient to God or not, some angels chose disobedience. Satan, also known as the devil, and his demonic minions, are fallen angels who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
But why did some of the angels fall? However, they are not made in the image and likeness of God as human beings are. One thing is sure. Miracles still happen today.
This precious baby now lives on. Despite all odds, through the courageous efforts of rescuers and by the sheer grace of an Almighty God, baby Lily lives. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. There are people who have had encounters with angels in our world today. Maybe some are aware of these angelic meetings. Angels are still among us.
For they have been sent by God. To give a message from God — There are many examples in the Bible of when God sends an angel to give a specific message to an individual or people.
In Genesis 18 , God sent three men, messengers, to Abraham and Sarah to tell them that she would bear a son. He sent the angel Gabriel to Mary, in Luke 1 , to tell that she would give birth to the very Son of God. The angel Gabriel came to Zechariah to tell of the news that Elizabeth would bear a son in Luke 1.
In Matthew 28 , an angel appeared at the tomb of Christ to announce that Jesus rose. To protect us — Many times God sends angels to protect, guard, and fight for us. God tells us in Psalm 91 that He would give angels charge concerning us to guard us in all our ways. Daniel says that he shut the mouth of the lions so that no harm came to him who was found blameless before God.
In 2 Kings , Elisha prayed that his servant would see the armies of angels surrounding the city. Why so? In contrast, the false teachers troubling the Colossians advocated the worship of angels Col. Unfallen angels know better. There are no examples of prayers addressed to angels in Scripture. Jesus entertained that possibility of angelic assistance but through asking the Father. I cannot rule out praying to the Father for angelic assistance.
However, addressing angels in their own right falls into another way of spoiling the gospel. This is the way of interposition. Instead of addressing the Father and Jesus, as our Great High Priest, another or others are put in their place e.
Mary and the saints. Human beings and angels are persons. Both human beings and angels are moral persons. Their creator holds both kinds of creature accountable for their actions. Consequently, both fallen angels and fallen human beings face divine judgment. Happily, for believers, Christ has faced it for us. In the hierarchy of creaturely importance, it appears that human beings are higher than angels.
According to Paul, believers judge angels 1 Cor. There is no biblical text to support the idea that angels judge us. The fact is that Scripture is not addressed to angels, but to us.
There is therefore so much we do not know about angels. As spirits, they do not have bodies in my view, although not all would agree with me. Why did some of the angels defect from God and not others? Angelology lends itself to much speculation. By way of contrast, like Calvin, we need to be very cautious when we go beyond Scripture and when we do so we need to say that this is what we are doing. The gospel can be spoiled by disproportion.
Too much can be made of angels. Adherents of New Age thinking provide such an example. Notes: 1. Enarrationes in Psalmos , 1, John Vriend, ed. Graham A.
